
These high power microscopes are also commonly known as "compound" microscopes. Generally,
they have three or four distinct magnifications: usually 40X, 100X, 400X, and sometimes 1000X or
1600X. Compound microscopes are used to look at microscopic things that are difficult or
impossible to see with the naked eye. They are great for looking at plant cross sections, cells,
bacteria, and etc... Although compound microscopes offer powerful magnification possibilities, their
working distance is very small since the objective lenses are so close to the microscope slide. The
light of these types of microscopes is located underneath the stage and shine up through the
transparent slide into the objective lens, clearly illuminating the image in the eyepiece. According to
their structural characteristics, compound microscopes are generally divided into three groups:
monocular compound microscopes, binocular compound microscopes, and trinocular compound
